ZENE High Performance Brushless Motor Modification QA

Unlock True Speed: The Ultimate Guide to ZENE High-Performance LEGO Technic RC Kits

Are you a LEGO Technic enthusiast looking to push the limits of speed and power? Have you ever felt that your high-performance MOC or RC-modified set is being held back by stock parts? You're not alone. High-speed LEGO car builders often find that standard plastic parts can't handle the torque of a powerful brushless motor. This motivated us to redesign the core of the drivetrain: the differential.

Discover why our custom metal differential is crucial for high-performance LEGO Technic sports cars and how our RC modification kits can transform your build.

Why Standard LEGO Differentials Can't Handle Extreme Power

When upgrading to a high-speed RC system, the original LEGO differential is often the first part to fail. Here are the common problems we set out to solve:

  • Accuracy Issues: Standard LEGO parts have manufacturing limitations that affect precision, which is not ideal for high-speed applications.
  • High-Speed Toothing Problem: LEGO materials can lack the strength for high-speed rotation, leading to "toothing" or stripped gears under load.
  • Load Capacity: Stock differentials are designed for lightweight models and may fail when used in heavy-duty or high-torque applications.
  • Friction and Durability: High friction can reduce efficiency, and plastic parts wear out quickly, affecting the differential's lifespan.
  • Specific Use Restrictions: The general-purpose design isn't suitable for specialized, high-performance mechanical applications.

Words are one thing, but seeing is believing. Watch how our high-performance RC modification kit, including the differential and lights, transforms the LEGO Technic Ferrari Daytona SP3 42143.

Your Questions Answered: ZENE RC Modification Kits FAQ

We get a lot of questions about our custom differentials, motors, and full RC modification kits. Here are the answers to the most common ones.

Differential & Drivetrain Parts

Is the product a complete set or a separate accessory?

Answer: We currently provide two types of products:

  1. Complete modification packages for LEGO Technic models like: (See them in action: https://youtu.be/8momsmpC6AE)
  2. Separate accessory parts, including:
    • a) Independent metal differentials (Square, H-shaped, single-input, double-input). Dimensions are compatible with LEGO unit proportions.

b) Drive axle, alloy 1:10, 23801 & 11950

c) Drive axle, nylon 1:8 23801

d) Small set: differential + 2445 brushless motor + planetary reducer + ESC + drive axle + metal shaft + universal joint. Supports 2S (7.4v) & 3S (11.1V) LiPo batteries.

Is the kit compatible with standard LEGO parts and RC outputs?

Answer: Yes. We offer two output ways: a cross-shaped or square metal output shaft. These come with U-shaped universal joints with holes on both ends, making them fully compatible with your LEGO axles. (Many thanks to @FriedlS for the HD shot)

What is the gear ratio of this metal differential?

Answer: 1.65:1

Does the U-joint have a LEGO axle hole on one end?

Answer: Yes, this universal joint has a LEGO axle hole on both sides, similar to CaDa's metal universal joints.

How deep is the U-joint at the differential input?

Answer: The bending point of the U-shaped universal joint is located outside the differential output, allowing shafts to be connected consistently. The size of the differential is all-inclusive and will not interfere with other parts of your chassis design.

Why do Differentials Come in Black and White?

Answer: The material is identical; the only difference is the color. Colors are generally sent randomly. If you have a specific request, please let us know.

Motor and Planetary Reducer Part

Does the motor have a housing to attach it to LEGO parts?

Answer: Yes, the motor connects to a planetary reducer. The reducer housing has multiple mounting holes for fixing it securely to your chassis structure. Refer to the red arrow (Fig 7) for fixing to the differential, matching the points in Fig 8. The blue arrow (Fig 7) connects to the metal shaft (middle arrow, Fig 8) for power output.

What does "bearing drive shaft" mean?

Answer: The standard LEGO drive axle combines parts 11950+92909. Our bearing drive axle is a custom-fabricated combination of 11950 + stainless steel 92909, with built-in ball bearings. This provides superior part strength, significantly reduced friction, and increases the service life by hundreds of times. (Note: The 1:10 bearing transaxle cannot be linked with standard LEGO wheels).

What is the reduction ratio of the planetary reduction gearbox?

Answer: The reduction ratio (i) is 1:4. Since the matched 2445 motor has a max speed of 50,000 RPM, the maximum output speed after deceleration is 12,500 RPM.

What are the specs for the 2445 brushless motor?

Answer: It is a 2445 brushless motor with 3600kv.

  • Max Speed: 50,000 RPM
  • Max Voltage: 13.2v
  • See the diagram below for more details.

Other Common Questions

Is there high rotation resistance in the transaxle?

Answer: There will be some resistance to the initial rotation. After a brief run-in period, the resistance will reduce to normal, low-friction ball bearing levels. The parts are securely glued/screwed together, so wheels will not come off unless something breaks.

What Remote Control is used, and is it sold separately?

Answer: We use a 2.4G radio remote control (RC gun handle) and a receiver with light control. It supports one-handed operation (steering, acceleration, deceleration) with a stable remote control distance of up to 400 meters. Additionally, the receiver has a built-in gyroscope, which you can manually enable to assist with drift control.

If you need to purchase this part separately, please contact us.

What battery model is required, and is it sold separately?

Answer: The kit is designed for standard LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries used in RC models. We recommend a 2S (7.4V) battery for sufficient, controllable power. A 3S (11.1V) battery can be used but is very powerful ("violent"). We do not currently sell batteries, but please contact us individually if you need assistance.

Tell me about the lights for the 42143, 42156, and 42096 kits.

Answer: These specific modification kits come with special lights that are compatible with the remote control. Some lights (like headlights) can be controlled manually from the remote. Other parts are automatic; for example, the taillights will automatically dim and brighten based on the amount of throttle, just like real brake lights.
