The original castle, on a bookshelf

Mini Sleeping Beauty Castle is the original. It opened with Disneyland in July 1955, it was the first castle the studio ever put up, and the much larger Cinderella Castle in Florida is a later interpretation of it. The California version is pink, smaller and more storybook, with a working drawbridge and a walkway through the middle, and it has stood at the end of Main Street for seventy years.

Turrets, a gate, a drawbridge front and a footprint that fits on a bookshelf — Lego Disney Mini Sleeping Beauty Castle 40720 is the miniature of the original Disney castle. At this scale the model is almost all roof and tower, the walls are only a few bricks deep, and there is no interior and nothing that opens.

Very little is needed here, and that is deliberate. Two warm sources from ZENE Bricks sit inside the gate and behind the windows on the front; a cooler accent picks out the turret tips so they still read against a dark background; the rest of the model is left alone. There is no flood lighting and no bright spot behind the printed detail, because on a miniature both immediately turn the building into a lamp.

At this size there is nowhere for a bright light to hide, so the output is kept low and the sources sit on the tower tips and behind the gate. It is the Disney castle on the studio logo and the obvious place to start with a lego mini disney castle, and the most straightforward disney castle light kit in the range. It takes up about as much room as a paperback, so a crowded shelf of lego disney sets has space for it.
