A warm dome in a cold landscape
The igloo is a shelter built from the material that is trying to kill you.
Snow insulates, blocks wind and can be cut into blocks, which is why it has been used in the Arctic for centuries. In the last decade it has also become a glamping fantasy: a transparent dome, a hot tub and a view of the northern lights. The Friends Igloo Holiday Adventure takes the second idea and gives it to three characters who need a weekend away.
Winter camping, with better lighting
The igloo sits between survival shelter and holiday accommodation. The set chooses the holiday version: a steam pool, fairy lights and a camera, with no suggestion that anyone is in danger. It works as a display. It takes the shape of an extreme shelter and fills it with the comforts of a cabin, which is a very contemporary idea of winter travel.
Lego Igloo Holiday Adventure 41760 comes with three characters, Paisley, her younger sister Ella and their friend Aliya, plus two sled dogs. The dome opens at the front onto a seating area, a fire pit and a small steam pool. Inside there are fairy lights, a lava lamp, two cups of cocoa and a bowl of cookies; outside there are snowshoes, a camera and a sled. It is small enough to sit on a desk but detailed enough to reward a close look.
Inside and outside are deliberately different in ZENE Bricks light kit. Warm amber gathers around the seating and fire pit, the fairy lights keep their own small points, and a pale blue accent at the steam pool suggests heat without looking like a lamp. The exterior snow stays cool and mostly unlit, so the dome reads as a warm object in a cold place. The lead leaves under the floor and exits at the back of the base.
It works as a toy and as a decoration. Children can open the dome and move the characters; adults can leave it closed on a shelf as a small winter scene. Christmas lego toys usually mean vehicles and advent calendars, so a christmas themed lego set about glamping is a useful change of subject. The small lego christmas sets size also makes it a good gift for someone who wants a seasonal build that does not take a weekend.
