The remote control works up to 10 m and can operate several lights at once.
The Nightmare Before Christmas was made in stop-motion, one frame at a time, on sets that were built to be lit from every angle.
Halloween Town, lit for Christmas
The film connects Halloween and Christmas by treating both as places with their own rules, and its look owes as much to German expressionism as to Tim Burton's drawings. The LEGO Ideas set is the 59th release in the line, based on a fan submission by Tvrulesmylife, and it is the first official set to build the film's three main locations together.
A film built one frame at a time
The stop-motion process dictated the look of Halloween Town. Every set had to be small enough to reach, every light had to be placed by hand, and every puppet had to hold a pose for the length of an exposure. The buildings are crooked and the streets are narrow because they were designed around the camera. The LEGO model inherits those proportions, which is why it reads as a film set rather than a town.
Spiral Hill, the graveyard, Jack's house and the Town Hall join into one 2,193-piece display in set 21351, with eight characters, from Jack Skellington and Sally to a brick-built Mayor with two faces. A large moon sits behind the hill. Jack's house lifts open to show his formula for Christmas, and the Town Hall has a lectern for his speech.
Four circuits divide the scene: the moon, the town buildings, the square and the graveyard. The moon takes a cold, even wash and becomes the brightest thing in the display; windows and street lamps use warmer amber; the Town Hall has its own circuit so it can be lit while the gate stays dark. Small red and green accents appear around the Christmas details, but the palette stays moonlit rather than festive.
A dark shelf suits it better than a bright living room. The model is at its best when the room is dim and the moon is the first thing the eye finds. The christmas lego sets for adults who collect film dioramas will have room for it beside a Halloween display, and the lego christmas light kit gives it a second season.
The moon, on its own circuit
This lighting kits version splits the buildings, the square and the moon into four groups instead of two, so the tower can be lit while the gate stays dark and the moon keeps a separate, softer level of its own. Anyone already running the first kit will see the difference immediately in a dark room; for a fresh build it is the version to take of this disney building kit, and the one that suits the lego disney sets for adults shelf.
Halloween Town was built for the camera rather than for an audience in a room. The stop-motion production ran across twenty separate stages, with hundreds of puppets and sets, and every shot had to be lit by hand and held steady for each frame. That is why the film has no single natural brightness — the lighting changes from shot to shot by design. The Lego Nightmare Before Christmas set arrived through LEGO Ideas, where a fan submission reached ten thousand supporters and was chosen for production.
The same pair of buildings, fountain and moon as the first kit, with the town gate, the tower and the square built as separate blocks on one base. Roofs curve and sag across 21351, the ground is textured rather than flat, and the moon sits well behind the buildings, which is what gives the model its depth.
This version keeps the layered approach and changes how it is controlled. The Christmas build now runs in more zones: the moon, the interior windows, the street lamps, the graveyard figures and the exterior silhouette wash are all separate, so a dark room and a lit one can be produced from the same model. The moon stays on its own circuit because the composition depends on it being the brightest thing present. The wider zoning makes it work as a holiday display in either season.
ZENE Bricks's upgraded red surround LED lights, combined with the original green lighting atmosphere, more in line with Christmas. By contrasting the hidden blue and green colors, the Halloween scene appears and disappears, especially adding a seamless light bar to the huge moon, simulating the halo of moonlight, making the scene richer and more interesting.
